Think I missed something?\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:jjordan@insightpartners.com\">Email me<\/a> and tell me all about it.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/05\/16\/openai-ceo-sam-altman-artificial-intelligence-congress\">OpenAI CEO in &#8220;historic&#8221; move calls for regulation before Congress<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>It seems unlikely that lawmakers will be able to take any action on AI before it becomes entirely mainstream. Still, concerns arose this week when OpenAI CEO Sam Altman asked Congress for AI regulation &#8220;above a crucial threshold of capabilities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Via Axios, concerns that top the list include dangerous and harmful content, impersonation of public and private figures (remember <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/chrisstokelwalker\/pope-puffy-jacket-ai-midjourney-image-creator-interview\">Balenciaga Pope<\/a>?), and, with 2024 already looming ahead of us: election misinformation.<\/p>\n<p>Watch the whole testimony below while you&#8217;re clearing out your inbox (or writing an AI roundup that your boss now expects weekly).<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fP5YdyjTfG0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleHeader-headline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/05\/18\/meta-pulls-the-curtain-back-on-its-ai-chips-for-the-first-time.html\">Meta pulls the curtain back on its A.I. chips for the first time<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>After ending 2022 with barely a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/fake-metaverse-good-real-metaverse-bad\/\">literal (virtual) leg to stand on<\/a>, Meta has been dropping open-source <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insightpartners.com\/ideas\/ai-news-may-11\/\">AI innovations<\/a> at a rapid pace in 2023. This week, they gave us a peek into the chip they&#8217;re using to power the Metaverse and generative AI technology. Meta dropped some juicy numbers behind their largest LLaMA model: LLaMA 65B contains 65 billion parameters and was trained on 1.4 trillion tokens.<\/p>\n<p>The company also mentioned they developed an internal generative AI coding tool to help their developers work more efficiently, similar to GitHub Copilot.<\/p>\n<p>Per CNBC, Meta has also been &#8220;overhauling its data center designs to focus more on energy-efficient techniques, such as liquid cooling, to reduce excess heat.&#8221; A theme \u2014 and an opportunity \u2014 we&#8217;ll see more of in the coming months is the incredible environmental toll of training AI models. Training one AI model is estimated to produce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/bernardmarr\/2023\/03\/22\/green-intelligence-why-data-and-ai-must-become-more-sustainable\/?sh=bdfe0b27658c\">626,00 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalent,<\/a> &#8220;nearly five times the lifetime emissions of an average American car.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/videos\/2023-05-15\/investing-opportunities-with-generative-ai-video\">Investing Opportunities With Generative AI [Video]<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>What do investors want in an AI-driven business? Via Bloomberg, Insight&#8217;s very own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insightpartners.com\/team\/george-mathew\/\">George Mathew<\/a> gave his take on what separates the hype from the real opportunity: the ability to have private data available to build AI products, a focus on user experiences, and having a great workflow that fits the way software fits within the industry. The combination of those aspects can make for a &#8220;very compelling&#8221; business.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Bits and bots<\/h2>\n<p><strong>There&#8217;s an app for that. <\/strong>OpenAI dropped a ChatGPT iOS app this week, killing dozens (hundreds?) of third-party apps in the process.
