Think I missed something?\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:jjordan@insightpartners.com\">Email me<\/a>\u00a0and tell me all about it.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Less is not more<\/h2>\n<p>Like every one of my middle school crushes, this week began with extreme enthusiasm followed by extreme nerd outrage for Meta\u2019s LIMA (Less Is More for Alignment) model.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">LIMA: Less Is More for Alignment<\/p>\n<p>Presents LIMA, a 65B LLaMa language model fine-tuned on only 1k curated samples w\/o RLHF.<\/p>\n<p>Outputs from LIMA are either equivalent or strictly preferred to GPT-4 or Bard in 43% or 58% of cases, respectively.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/oKYqnkBNpo\">https:\/\/t.co\/oKYqnkBNpo<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/W658u7Y8n1\">pic.twitter.com\/W658u7Y8n1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Aran Komatsuzaki (@arankomatsuzaki) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/arankomatsuzaki\/status\/1660459392695693317?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 22, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The concept of an effective language model that doesn&#8217;t need to be trained on massive amounts of data is appealing \u2014 it would open up incredible possibilities for open-source innovation and speciality uses cases. Alpaca was another model making some noise along these lines earlier in the year:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Broad instruction tuning on OSS LLMs does not work well! Was ofc happy to try it out, but<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIntelligence laundering\u201d from GPT4 probably is not real at all despite the initial Alpaca excitement<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s some hypotheses\ud83e\uddf5<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Kevin Fischer (@KevinAFischer) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KevinAFischer\/status\/1642935719483277312?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 3, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"title mathjax\"><a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2305.15717\">The False Promise of Imitating Proprietary LLMs<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>&#8230;unfortunately, research published yesterday throws cold water on all of this. &#8220;An emerging method to cheaply improve a weaker language model is to finetune it on outputs from a stronger model, such as a proprietary system like ChatGPT (e.g., Alpaca, Self-Instruct, and others). This approach looks to cheaply imitate the proprietary model&#8217;s capabilities using a weaker open-source model.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Overall, we conclude that model imitation is a false promise: there exists a substantial capabilities gap between open and closed LMs that, with current methods, can only be bridged using an unwieldy amount of imitation data or by using more capable base LMs. In turn, we argue that the highest leverage action for improving open-source models is to tackle the difficult challenge of developing better base LMs, rather than taking the shortcut of imitating proprietary systems.&#8221; Brutal.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/generative-ai-pilots-have-companies-reaching-for-the-guardrails-4326704c\">Generative AI Pilots Have Companies Reaching for the Guardrails<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Via WSJ, chip maker Nvidia recently released a guardrails tool to help companies anxious about use of ChatGPT and other AI tools employees may be using with proprietary or sensitive company data. The release helps developers set limits on what users can do with LLMs, &#8220;such as restricting certain topics and detecting misinformation and preventing execution of malicious code.&#8221; Per the article, Apple, Verizon, and other companies have restricted or banned access to AI tools like Chat GPT \u2014 but from our own study of the space, we see many big financial institutions finding ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/insightsdistilled.com\/may-23\/\">embrace AI tech to their own benefit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there&#8217;s also always the perpetual question of <a href=\"https:\/\/ainowinstitute.org\/publication\/algorithmic-accountability#footnote-list-44\">bias in AI<\/a>, which we expect to hear more about as responsible AI concerns grow louder with widespread adoption. And all this comes on the heels of Sam Altman&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insightpartners.com\/ideas\/ai-news-may-18\/\">testimony to Congress<\/a> last week, with <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/blog\/governance-of-superintelligence#SamAltman\">subsequent<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/05\/25\/when-new-grant-program-openai-aims-to-crowdsources-ai-regulation\/\">announcements<\/a> from OpenAI about AI governance.<\/p>\n<h2>Chips<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/neuralink\/status\/1661857379460468736?s=20\"><strong>Neuralink just got FDA approval<\/strong><\/a> to launch their first-in-human clinical study. All snark and singularity commentary aside, chip implants could mean massive quality of life improvements and regained autonomy for those with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, implanted chips have shown incredible, life-changing promise, at least in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-023-06094-5\">one recent case<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Dips<\/h2>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Remember when software wasn\u2019t connected to the internet? Didn\u2019t think so.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is the savage intro for <a href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/source\/features\/ai\/microsoft-outlines-framework-for-building-ai-apps-and-copilots-expands-ai-plugin-ecosystem\/\">Microsoft&#8217;s blog post<\/a> covering announcements from this week&#8217;s developer conference. Excuse me while I cry in elder millennial&#8230;I remember booting up my Gateway desktop (delivered in those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/nostalgia\/comments\/yhfo4x\/gateway_computers_arrived_in_cow_print_boxes\/\">cow-print boxes<\/a>!) in MS-DOS to play Doom II from disk (an incredibly inappropriate game for a grade schooler to play, but that&#8217;s a topic for another time).<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, Microsoft announced a multitude of AI-powered plugins integrated into their ecosystem of products. It&#8217;s not <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LinusEkenstam\/status\/1661127802773557250?s=20\">particularly elegant<\/a> (hope you love chat bubbles) but the new Copilot stack caught our eye.<\/p>\n<p>After the smashing success of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23459852\/microsoft-clippy-ugly-sweater-windows-charity-price\">Clippy jumpers<\/a> this past holiday season, I was truly hoping for a nostalgic resurgence of this iconic personality in Microsoft&#8217;s AI rollout \u2014 but it seems like these persistent, faceless bubbles will be the new norm.<\/p>\n<h2>Grill fodder<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Bill Gates, have you even met Tony Stark?<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cWhoever wins the personal agent, that\u2019s the big thing, because you will never go to a search site again, you will never go to a productivity site, you\u2019ll never go to Amazon again,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/05\/22\/bill-gates-predicts-the-big-winner-in-ai-smart-assistants.html\">he said this week<\/a> at an AI event. Yeah Bill, when can I get <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J.A.R.V.I.S.\">Paul Bettany<\/a> at my beck and call?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Another example of incumbents adding generative AI features.<\/strong> Adobe announced a beta of &#8220;generative fill&#8221; this week in Photoshop, and the demo is as slick as you would expect.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Generative Fill, a new superpower integrated throughout Photoshop, launching in beta today.<\/p>\n<p>Powered by Firefly, our generative AI family of models, Photoshop now let\u2019s you summon new objects and augment creations layer by layer.
