{"id":26893,"date":"2026-03-09T09:39:55","date_gmt":"2026-03-09T13:39:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.insightpartners.com\/?p=26893"},"modified":"2026-03-09T09:39:55","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T13:39:55","slug":"optain-leadership-profile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.insightpartners.com\/ideas\/optain-leadership-profile\/","title":{"rendered":"How Optain Health is transforming disease detection through the eye"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After more than 25 years in healthcare leadership \u2014 as CSO at Mindset Medical, EVP of Strategy at Titan Spine (acquired by Medtronic), CEO of NuHope, advisor to the FDA and the White House \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/linkedin.com\/in\/jeff-dunkel-5529aa4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeff Dunkel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> knows an opportunity when he sees one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When he was approached in 2023 to lead <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optainhealth.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Optain Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as CEO, he saw the chance to transform disease detection through oculomics: using the eye to understand the body\u2019s overall health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Optain is using robotic imaging, AI, and teleophthalmology to deliver it at scale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat I\u2019ve learned is\u2026when there is a need, and you see the opportunity to create a solution, you kind of are beholden to do so if you have the capability,\u201d says Dunkel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dB8n1Odbgn0?si=Jo03zChCVgeioG3m\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>The market was waiting<\/h2>\n<p>Nearly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/php\/data-research\/index.html\">30 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes<\/a>\u00a0in the United States, and every one of them needs annual screening. But the current system fails them.<\/p>\n<p>The traditional approach has been to force complex, expensive equipment into primary care settings or push patients downstream to referrals, only to then have tests come back with false negatives. Neither approach is efficient nor cheap enough for population-level screening.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cThere\u2019s a large population of individuals who have a disease state, and they\u2019re unaware that they have it. And the focus for us is to appropriately identify patients who need help. There\u2019s a lot of waste in the system.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Optain takes a different approach. Rather than downstream diagnostics, \u201c[We] have a very strong focus on very simple, easy-to-use screening devices,\u201d says Dunkel, to make fast, accurate, accessible frontline screening economically viable. \u201cThe market was waiting for someone to get the solution right,\u201d he says. \u201cThe customers are begging for the product. You just have to be the one who creates the best product and the best fit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ophthalmologytimes.com\/view\/optain-health-secures-26-million-series-a-funding\">company was co-created in 2023 by Aegis Ventures<\/a>, which also created the <a href=\"https:\/\/aegisventures.com\/digital-consortium\">Aegis Digital Consortium<\/a>, a group of 14 leading U.S. health systems to co-develop AI-driven healthcare companies.<\/p>\n<h2>The eye is the window to the body<\/h2>\n<p>The eye is the only part of the body where blood vessels and nerves can be directly observed without surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Optain captures an image of the retina and then uses AI to evaluate the quality of the image and analyze it to detect abnormalities. They house <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optainhealth.com\/eyetelligence-assure\/\">millions of retinal images<\/a> and AI specialists to identify lesions that, if found, might indicate vision loss, vascular patterns suggesting cardiovascular disease, and subtle changes that point to glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, or age-related macular degeneration.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cWe can see blood vessels, we can see nerves, we can see lesions like cotton wool spots. Those can indicate that you\u2019re losing your vision\u2026 or are all attributable to disease states\u2026across your body.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>From this single, non-invasive image capture, Optain\u2019s AI or teleophthalmology solutions can screen for multiple disease states. \u201cOur opportunity is to use this non-invasive, rapid-deployed technology\u2026to get the right patients to the right treatment space,\u201d says Dunkel.<\/p>\n<p>And it can be done anywhere. The company\u2019s portable robotic camera captures high-quality retinal images in under one minute without requiring pupil dilation or trained operators. It works in lit rooms, speaks seven languages to guide the patient, and can be deployed in primary care offices, community health fairs, and everywhere in between.<\/p>\n<p>This technology builds on more than a decade of research led by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mingguang-he-51790838\/?originalSubdomain=hk\">Professor Mingguang He<\/a>, described by Dunkel as \u201cthe world\u2019s best AI ophthalmologist who was creating things that no one in the world thought was possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This sort of collaboration is central to Optain\u2019s strategy. \u201cThere is no one who\u2019s going to offer a single solution,\u201d says Dunkel. What excites him is \u201ccreating a company that has the ability to act as a conduit for someone else\u2019s technology, to act as a pathway to drive someone else to a proper solution, or as a reason to have enthusiasm as a patient in order to make things better.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Frontline screening at scale<\/h2>\n<p>Optain needed to get more than just the science right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you really want to do screening well, you need to do three things,\u201d says Dunkel. \u201cFirst, you have to provide clinical value. Second is you need to have a fiscal ROI, which means you need to be affordable. And then, third, you need to have ease of use. It has to be very, very simple. We have an overburdened and overtaxed primary care network in the U.S.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In September 2025, Insight Partners led Optain\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insightpartners.com\/ideas\/optain-health-closes-26-million-series-a-to-bring-oculomics-to-primary-care-and-beyond\/\">$26M Series A<\/a>, also bringing in seven major U.S. health systems, which together deliver care to 28 million patients across 25 states. All seven are deploying Optain\u2019s platform across their networks.<\/p>\n<p>In the same timeframe, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/optain-health-acquires-eyepacs-to-expand-access-to-next-generation-retinal-imaging-for-primary-care-and-advance-oculomics-302606262.html\">Optain acquired EyePACS<\/a>, the largest teleophthalmology group in the U.S., with whom they had partnered for the last two years.<\/p>\n<p>The combination of Optain\u2019s AI-powered, robotic retinal imaging and EyePACS\u2019 nationwide teleophthalmology network expanded access to early disease detection for communities across the U.S. and worldwide. As of November 2025, Optain\u2019s platform is now live at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/optain-health-acquires-eyepacs-to-expand-access-to-next-generation-retinal-imaging-for-primary-care-and-advance-oculomics-302606262.html\">200 provider sites globally, with more than 1,000 deployments in planning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOptain represents our conviction in the power of better AI \u2014 deployed at the edge, inside clinical workflows,\u201d said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insightpartners.com\/team\/scott-barclay\/\">Scott Barclay<\/a>, managing director at Insight Partners, at the time of the investment.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cBy making retinopathy screening truly accessible, Optain is already changing care delivery \u2014 and we believe it will become the upstream gateway in primary care for AI-driven diagnoses across many conditions.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Better, faster, cheaper<\/h2>\n<p>The company was built on AI from day one. \u201cOur thesis was that we could use AI to identify features, biomarkers, lesions, et cetera, that are in the eye that allow us to attribute those to other disease states,\u201d says Dunkel.<\/p>\n<p>AI is embedded throughout, from the screening workflow to company operations to generating new diagnostic data so healthcare providers can better understand their patients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost companies that are AI, they\u2019ll say, \u2018We can do these amazing things if you just give us your data.\u2019 We\u2019re the opposite,\u201d says Dunkel. \u201cWhat we say is, we can use AI, and we can use this image to generate new data for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a veteran in the space, Dunkel sees AI not as a revolutionary break from the past, but as the latest tool that will help healthcare evolve and improve. Better, faster, cheaper care. \u201cI think that\u2019s what AI is going to give us the ability to do,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<h2>Winning the future with humans<\/h2>\n<p>But it is humans who will deliver it. \u201cOne thing that is often overlooked when we are talking about AI is that there are still people behind the scenes who are building that,\u201d says Dunkel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are some things where you can kind of tinker around, but a regulated medical device is not a space where you can just tinker and hope to get it right. You have to know what you\u2019re doing,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the real success behind Optain is the team that is building the company. The product, the AI solutions, the teleophthalmology, et cetera, that\u2019s a byproduct of the talent that we brought in.
