As AI agents<\/a> become first-class participants in software development,\u00a0we are seeing\u00a0a new generation of infrastructure\u00a0emerging\u00a0to support both developers and the agents writing code alongside them.\u00a0At Insight Partners,\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0been\u00a0closely tracking\u00a0this shift for several years,\u00a0investing\u00a0in companies\u00a0like\u00a0E2B<\/span>*<\/span>,\u00a0CrewAI<\/span>*<\/span>,\u00a0Runware<\/span>*<\/span>,\u00a0Fastino<\/span>*<\/span>, and Databricks*.<\/span><\/p>\n

Databases and backends are an area we have followed closely since the early days of large language models. We have been looking for a platform that is easy enough for developers\u00a0building\u00a0AI applications\u00a0today but\u00a0designed for a future in which agents write more of the software,\u00a0manage state, and run workflows autonomously.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Traditional backends assume an experienced engineer will assemble the stack and know where to add transactions, retries, cache invalidation, and synchronization. That assumption\u00a0can\u00a0become a liability when agents are writing more of the code.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Convex was built for what comes next.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A\u00a0backend\u00a0built for developers and agents<\/h2>\n

Convex brings the core components of a modern\u00a0backend\u00a0platform\u00a0like\u00a0database, server functions, real-time synchronization, workflows, search, and file storage into a single, unified\u00a0TypeScript-native platform.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead of\u00a0stitching together\u00a0separate databases, APIs, queues, and synchronization services, developers and agents can express application logic directly in TypeScript. That means less glue code, fewer architectural decisions, and fewer places to make a plausible but\u00a0costly mistake.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We view Convex\u2019s reactive architecture as a good example of this. In a traditional stack, developers decide what data to fetch, when to refresh it, and how to keep every client in sync. Convex handles that automatically by tracking which queries depend on which data and pushing updates if and when that data changes. Mutations also run transactionally, helping applications remain consistent when multiple users or agents act at the same time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These properties matter in two ways: first, they make Convex a\u00a0strong\u00a0platform for coding agents. One language, strong types, automatic feedback, and fewer moving parts help agents produce applications that work beyond the\u00a0initial\u00a0demo. Convex\u00a0extends\u00a0that advantage with integrations for major coding agents that allow them to inspect real deployments, surface errors, and verify their work as they build.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Second, Convex is well-suited to running agentic applications<\/a>. Agents can read and write shared state, execute work concurrently, and use durable workflows that retry and resume after failures.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s\u00a0ahead<\/h2>\n

After following and using Convex for\u00a0some time, including for a fair number of weekend projects, we had the opportunity to meet the team last year.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jamie Turner and James Cowling both came from Dropbox, where Jamie led storage and database\u00a0engineering\u00a0and James helped build its multi-exabyte, geo-distributed storage infrastructure. They brought that experience to a problem that is easy to underestimate: removing backend complexity without giving up correctness.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We came away convinced that the depth of the team matched the ambition of the product.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Convex has spent years building the underlying database and sync engine while fostering a passionate developer community. That work is now showing up in adoption, with more than\u00a021,000 GitHub stars,\u00a0nearly 500,000\u00a0developers, 2 million applications built, and over 1.2 million weekly\u00a0npm\u00a0downloads.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We believe Convex can become a foundational backend layer for a world in which software is increasingly built by developers and agents working together.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
